Pedals Across the Globe: My Two Wheeled Adventure

The Decision to Ride

Hello everyone, im Gonzalo Lizama, Civil Engineer from Chile Currently living in Australia, and i want to share with you my story.

I have always been a bike enthusiast manly in Chile where biking is a collective vibe. After leaving my job as a cost engineer i decided to travel the world with my bike.
The trip began when landed in Canada where i was lucky enough to meet all my heroes and also get to know great part of BC.

The next country I visited was Australia, a place I fell in love with. It has provided me and my bike with countless unforgettable experiences, for which I am forever grateful.

After all this time, i have gained a lot of knowledge and now it is time to try something new and in someway give back to the bike community here in the OZ.

Would you like to know a bit more of these shenanigans?

Back then in 2023 the departure date approached, I focused on packing my bike into its travel bag. With precision, I disassembled my trusted companion: the pedals came off first, followed by the handlebars and front wheel. Lowering the seat post, I made sure every piece was snugly packed, surrounded by bubble wrap and foam to protect it from the inevitable bumps of air travel. I double-checked the airline’s requirements, ensuring my bag met the weight limit, which did not, so be careful with the weight limitations!

Airplanes and Bikes?

There are certain airlines that are made to travel with your bike, or any other stuff... (surfboard, kite, etc...)

Weight Limits and Dimensions

  • Most airlines have a weight limit of 32kg for bikes when they are part of the checked baggage allowance.

  • The maximum dimensions for a bike box (yes you can use a random box) or bag typically range from 292cm to 320cm in total linear dimensions, depending on the airline.

  • Fees vary widely by airline and route. For example, Air Canada charges $50 for a bike, while American Airlines does not charge a fee unless the bike is overweight or oversized, which incurs a $150 fee.

  • Always check policies before booking anything, and never ever trust lowcost airlines if you are traveling with something heavy in general

Canadian Adventure

Arrival in Vancouver

Touching down in Vancouver felt like a dream. After reassembling my bike at The University of British Columbia (UBC), I took a moment to soak in the surroundings. My week in Vancouver was filled with exploration. I rode along the Seawall, the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path, marveling at the stunning views of the ocean and city skyline.

Squamish: The Thrill of the Ride

After a week in Vancouver, I packed up my bike once more and made my way to Squamish. This small town, nestled between mountains and ocean, is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. I spent another week here, tackling the renowned trails that twisted through the lush forests. One of the best experiences of my trip was with Klade, a friendly Canadian who showed me around the town. He introduced me to the local biking scene, and we explored trails that showcased the breathtaking beauty of the area. I also met Jacob and Laura, two incredible riders from Australia, who pushed me to tackle some of the more challenging trails. On my way to Whistler, I encountered a group of Czech guys who offered me a lift in their massive truck. As we sat in traffic, which was horrendous, they invited me to join them for lunch with their family lol. Got to share a meal and stories with them, and it reminded me of the kindness of strangers on the road.

Whistler: A Month of Intensity

My journey continued to Whistler, where I settled in for a month of frantic downhill riding. Known for its world-class bike park, Whistler was a playground for thrill-seekers. I quickly became immersed in the vibrant biking community, attending events and riding with some of the best in the sport.During my time there, I tackled some of the biggest jumps in Canada. this was for sure like anything I had ever experienced, each jump felt like a personal victory. I also had the chance to meet a few famous riders with whom i was lucky enough to try to follow them down to the village!

Beloved Australia...

Now, having settled in Australia, I am channeling my passion for biking into a new venture: launching my own brand related to bike products and more. My experiences as a sales consultant have equipped me with the skills needed to navigate this exciting new challenge. The lessons learned from my travels—resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community—are guiding principles as I embark on this entrepreneurial journey.
